Showcasing councils’ services at county show No comments yet

Flintshire County Council and Denbighshire County Council will have a joint exhibition stand promoting various council services at the Denbighshire and Flintshire Show at The Green, Denbigh on Thursday, 20 August.

Information and advice will be available on a range of services including animal health, benefits advice, the Family Information Service, recycling, rural development and places to visit in the two counties.

A prominent feature of the exhibition will be an interactive displayhighlighting the Heather and Hill-forts project, an important environmental and archaeological initiative being undertaken jointly by the two councils.

Outside the exhibition tent, Denbighshire and Flintshire Countryside Services will be demonstrating ancient skills such as willow weaving.

Plants and garden furniture provided by two sheltered workshops, Tri Ffordd Nurseries based in Flintshire and Meifod Wood Products based in Denbighshire will also feature in the exhibition.

The councils’ tent is located at plot E – 11 – 20 overlooking the main ring.

From Denbighshire to Mbarara No comments yet

A Denbighshire County Council officer will be travelling to Uganda this summer to work with orphans in Mbarara, a region to the south west of the capital, Kampala.

Kerry Smith, a revenues officer based at Russell House, Rhyl, is planning to travel with seven other people from two churches in the area, to work in a school and orphanage.  The orphanage was founded some years ago by one dedicated individual.  Pastor Emmy set up the orphanage single-handedly as part of the local school.  The orphanage is now home to 190 children.

Kerry and her group plan to help at the school and orphanage by teaching English and arts and crafts as well as sports and games.  The pastor has made a special plea for children’s football boots – so if you have any spare, dig them out and send them along to Russell House in Rhyl or contact Kerry directly (details below).

Kerry says, “We need to raise £1,000 each to cover our expenses and to purchase the materials needed for the schools.  We also hope to be able to raise a further £2,000 to build a well in the village.  The village currently does not have a well and has to get all its water from the nearby river, which is dirty and often has strong, dangerous currents.

“We are also planning to take some of the children camping for a few days.  As part of the trip, we will spend a few days in Kampala visiting an African charity which works with children in the slums and shanty towns as well as visiting a muslim school near the city.”

The group has been busy fund-raising over the last few months, but still need more funds to secure the money they need to make the trip and to cover the cost of all the materials needed for the schools and the well.  To date, they have done a fancy dress climb of Snowdon and hosted an evening where they cooked a three course meal and laid on the entertainment for their guests.

On 9 May, the group is hosting an Auction of Goods and Promises at the Emmanuel Christian Centre, Lloyd Street, Llandudno.  Doors open at 6:30pm and the auction starts at 6:45pm.

So if you have any old football boots, would like to attend the auction or need more information or just simply would like to donate to Kerry and her group, then please contact Kerry directly on 07854 219636 or kerryjsmith@hotmail.co.uk.

This won’t be Kerry’s first trip – in 2006 Kerry when to the Philippines visiting orphanages and prisons.  In 2008, she went with to Germany to work with Operation Mobilisation, a Christian organisation whose ships take aid, books and education all over the world.  The group worked on the refurbishment of one of the ships.
