Armour, artefacts, action for festival of British archaeology No comments yet

Visitors to Denbighshire this July will witness ghosts of the past in the form of early-medieval foot soldiers in full battle order with pack-horses marching on the Clwydian Range back to their camp.

Along with fun activities, exhibitions, events and guided walks to celebrate the Festival of British Archaeology in Denbighshire, Cwmwd Iâl will be marching along the top of the Range to Loggerheads where their supporters and families have set up camp.

The group portrays the Cymric men and women living in and around the commote of Iâl in north east Wales in the 10th and11th centuries (AD900-1099). Iâl was the Welsh stronghold in and around the Clwydian Range at this time.

This event will kick off the celebrations for the Festival in Denbighshire on Saturday 18th July; the soldiers marching on the hills on the Saturday, arriving at Loggerheads in the late afternoon. The camp will be at the Country Park on Saturday and Sunday 18th and 19th July 11am-4pm (limited display on the Saturday and a full arena programme on Sunday, including the chance for children to train as Viking Age warriors).

Visitors will witness the warriors bringing to life both the turbulent and the typical times of the early medieval period, along with sights, smells and sounds, cooking, crafts and combat.

The weekend will also include exciting activities. Kit yourself out as a Cymric warrior and make your own shield, helmet and ‘blingtastic brooch’ with Clwyd-Powys Archaeological Trust along with a mystery artefact quiz…

Website helps to break the summer boredom blues No comments yet

A local website is coming to the rescue of children, young people (and their parents) who may find themselves at a loose end during the summer holidays.

YouthDen.com, the website for children and young people in Denbighshire, has compiled listings of events taking place all over the county.  The website co-ordinator said, “The most common thing we are asked at YouthDen is for information about things to do, so we have put together a whole list of events and pastimes taking place this summer.  They can be searched by venue, by age and by price and many of the events are free!”

Children and Young people visiting Youthden.com will also have a chance to enter a fabulous competition to win tickets for “Never Forget”, the musical featuring the music of “Take That” at the Rhyl Pavilion Theatre.  Full details can be found by visiting www.youthden.com.  For those who do not have the internet, free access is available at local libraries.

Start an adventure at your library this summer No comments yet

Looking for ideas to keep your children occupied over the holidays? Then look no further – ‘Quest Seekers’ is the 2009 Summer Reading Challenge taking place in all Welsh libraries this summer.

Ruth Jones, the new celebrity library champion for Welsh libraries, invites children to embark on a mystical adventure.  She comments, “The Summer Reading Challenge is great fun and an excellent way to get your kids hooked on books. Your local library is a fantastic place to entertain the kids over the holidays – whether they are using the computers, doing craft activities or meeting their friends…and all for free!”

This year the Summer Reading Challenge theme is all about the power of the imagination, it will take young readers into a mysterious and wondrous land where they can discover the joy of reading and nurture a lifelong love for books.

Just sign up at your local library (it’s free!) and your children will receive a fabulous ‘moving image’ membership card and a special poster to keep track of their quest.

As a Quest Seeker your child will take part in three tasks: Firebird Rising, Mountain Mission and Dragon’s Lair.  Each task involves reading two books and if they finish them all, their quest is complete and they will receive a certificate celebrating their achievement.

Log on to the Quest Seekers websitewww.questseekers.org.uk and the adventure will really take flight!  It’s your child’s chance to join in the games and activities, read some exclusive blogs from top authors – and there’s even a stomach-churning dragon ride!

The Summer Reading Challenge is a powerful national UK reading promotion supported in Wales by funding from the Welsh Assembly Government via CyMAL: Museums, Archives and Libraries Wales and the Welsh Books Council. Last year over 3,370 children in Denbighshire took up the challenge – more than in any other county in Wales.
